Lesson 8 The Virgin Birth of CHRIST

Part 1

In last week´s study we learned that JRSUS CHRIST is DEITY. HE is the SON of GOD. In today´s lesson we will learn that HE became a man. HE took our likeness and form to HIMSELF.
Philipians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

As Christians, we believe that since Adam fell into sin, and that we all are born with a sin nature which we inherit from our parents.
Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

If CHRIST had inherited this sin nature, HE was a sinner and died for HIS own sin. Even if CHRIST had lived a sinless life, HE would be unable to save the soul of anyone. So how did GOD accomplish this requirement, that CHRIST be born without sin?

GOD the FATHER solved the problem by what is known as the “virgin birth”. The mystery of the virgin birth is to be believed, accepted, and adored by Christians. The only logical answer to the problem is that the sin nature passed from the father to the child and not from the mother to the child. JESUS did not have a human father. The HOLY GHOST was HIS FATHER. Mary was HIS mother but did not pass on a sin nature to the baby JESUS.

Virgin Birth Foretold.

No sooner had man sinned than GOD found a way to bring man back to HIM.
Genesis 3:15 is the first mention of the promised Redeemer.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

GOD calls Abraham to be the father of the chosen nation of Israel.
Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

This promised blessing was to be given to mankind through the tribe of Judah.
Genesis 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

The Saviour was to be born into the family of David.
II Samuel 7:8-16Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,
And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

The actual prophecy of the virgin birth is found in Isaiah7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
This same prophecy is repeated in Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The prophecy is that JESUS the human ONE was to be born, but JESUS the DIVINE GOD was to be given. That JESUS as GOD was eternal and could not be born is found in Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Fulfillment of the Prophecy

Matthew 1:18-25 gives the story of this fulfillment.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Luke 2:4-7 does also.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Mary was engaged to Joseph but they were not yet married. CHRIST was born of a virgin but a betrothed virgin so that she could be married to protect her good name. Mary´s conception was definitely from the Holy Ghost and not from her fiance Joseph or any other man. GOD guarantees this so that we might be given a perfect Saviour. GOD encouraged Joseph to marry Mary so that he could be a companion and guide to her in order to protect her from the law.
Leviticus 20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

In Matthew 1:25 we read that though Joseph and Mary were married they never lived together as husband and wife until after the birth of CHRIST. GOD took care to insert this verse with intimate information in order to show us that the unborn child could not possible be contaminated by a human father.
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

The Virgin Birth Is Taught in the Scripture

Matthew states that JESUS was conceived by the HOLY GHOST and born of a virgin in Matthew 1:18,20,23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Luke was a medical doctor and would be very interested in this medical phenomenon. Every child must have a father. Who, then, was the father of baby JESUS? If the father were human, then HE had a sin nature and we are still in our sins. Luke carefully explains the unusual conception in Luke 1:27,31, 34 and 35
To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

In Luke 1:34 Mary asks the sensible question of the angel - How can I have a child when I am not married and inferred that she was a pure virgin. In Luke 1:35 the angel explained that the Holy Ghost would be the father.

Lesson 7 Prophesies and the Life of CHRIST

Part 2

The Life of CHRIST

In HIS pre-incarnate state as GOD, JESUS has always existed. HE was before all things.
HIS birth to the Virgin Mary is recorded in the books of Matthew and Luke.
CHRIST was circumcised when HE was eight days old. This is recorded in Luke 2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

JESUS was taken to the Temple in Jerusalem at the age of twelve as recorded in Luke 2:41-48 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

JESUS spent HIS early years as a carpenter in the town of Nazareth.
Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

HE began HIS ministry in Judea, Samaria and Galilee. This period of time lasted six months.

JESUS´first miracle was performed at Cana of Galilee - John 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and HIS second miracle which was the healing of the nobleman´s son took place in Capernaum.
John 4:46 and 54 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

The second part of the ministry of CHRIST covered a period of 6 to 8 months in the area of Capernaum and Galilee. It was during this time that HE performed miracles, healed the sick, and preached the Gospel.

The third part of HIS ministry was the later Galilean ministry which lasted for approximately one year in the area of Galilee. The crowds began to follow HIM. HE preached the Sermon on the Mount during this time. Read Matthew chapters 5 through 7.

This the fourth stage of HIS ministry. The Pharisees began to hound HIM in earnest as they sought HIS life. HE traveled to Capernaum, Phoenicia, Bethsaida, Caesarea, Philippi and then re-entered Galilee.

HIS last six months was spent preaching, teaching, and traveling.

The last week of HIS ministry included what we now call Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, and Gethsemane as well as the trials and death on the cross.

Three days later, as prophesied, JESUS rose from the dead.

Forty days after the resurrection, CHRIST ascended visibly and bodily into heaven.
Acts 1:10-11 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

The Miracles of JESUS

Briefly, let’s definite miracle. A miracle is the setting aside of a lower law by a higher law. Lower law is the natural, physical law of the earth and of nature. Only GOD can do things contrary to this lower law.

If JESUS truly was able to perform miracles then HE is GOD. Man, however, cannot perform true miracles.

The LORD JESUS did not perform miracles to “show off” or to entertain the people. HE performed miracles to prove HIS DEITY and to cause men to believe in HIM, in HIS message, and in HIMSELF as a person.
John 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

JESUS performed believable miracles over nature. HE stilled the tempest, calmed the wind and water. He walked on water.
Matt. 8:26-27 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

Matt. 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

HE performed miracles over demons.
Mark 5:12-13 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

Matt. 8:28-32 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

JESUS performed miracles over disease. HE cleansed the leper, healed the lame, opened the eyes of the blind, caused the deaf to hear, and caused fever to leave the afflicted.
Matt. 8:3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

Matt. 12:10-13 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

JESUS performed miracles over death. HE raised the dead contrary to all human law.
John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Matt. 9:23-25 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.

Luke 7:12-15 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

Our SAVIOUR´s miracles were performed openly in the presence of many witnesses and were recorded by divine inspiration so that we might read and believe.
JESUS´ life on earth can be summarized in the words that we find in Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

HE left us an example that we should follow.
I Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

We are to walk as HE walked.
I John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

CHRIST came to do GOD´s will and so should we.

Lesson 7 Prophecies and the Life of Christ

Part 1

The birth of Jesus Christ was prophesied centuries before HE would come.
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
HE did not come unannounced. He came in the “fulness of times” as we learn from Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

GOD, through prophesy, reveals to us HIS master plan in intricate detail. It is through a study of the fulfillment of the smallest detail that our faith in GOD is encouraged. To see these details fulfilled exactly as prophesied strengthens our faith in the inspiration of the Scripture. It shows us that the Bible is not just a collection of books by many different authors, but it is one book with one author - GOD.

Let´s begin our study with some of the prophesies concerning the origin of CHRIST and those concerning the life of CHRIST.

Prophecies Concerning the Origin of CHRIST

CHRIST would come out of Israel.
Numbers 24:17-19 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
This prophesy was fulfilled in Matthew 1:1-17 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
Jesus Christ was born a Jew, a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David.

CHRIST would be born of David´s family and of the tribe of Judah.
Genesis 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

These prophesies were fulfilled by our Saviour in Luke 1:31-33 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

CHRIST would be born in Bethlehem.
Micah5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
This was fulfilled in Luke 2:4-7 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

CHRIST would be born of a virgin.
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
This was fulfilled in Matthew 1:18,22-23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

CHRIST coming was announced by a forerunner.
Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
This prophesy was fulfilled in John the Baptist.
Matthew 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Prophecies Concerning the Life of CHRIST

HE (CHRIST) would spend part of HIS childhood in Egypt.
Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

HE would suffer and make atonement for sin.
Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

II Corinthians 5:21 gives us the record of this fulfillment. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

HE would ride into Jerusalem on a colt.
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
This was fulfilled on Palm Sunday as told in Matthew 21:2-5 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

HE would be given gall and vinegar during HIS agony on the cross.
Psalm 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
This was fulfilled at the cross by the Roman soldiers.
Matthew 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

Not a bone would be broken even though this was contrary to Roman crucifixion practices.
Psalm 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
(Notice that no bone was broken of the Passover lamb either. Exodus 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.)
Normally, per Roman practice, the legs of the person being crucified were broken in order to speed death. However, this custom was broken in JESUS´s case.
John 19:33-36 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

Men would cast lots for HIS garments.
Psalm 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
This was fulfilled in Matthew 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

CHRIST would speak certain words as HE died on the cross.
Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
This was fulfilled the fourth time CHRIST spoke from the cross.
Mark 15:34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

CHRIST would rise again from the dead.
Psalm 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Peter verifies that was was fulfilled in Acts 2:23-24 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Searching the Scripture

Lesson 6 The Fear of the LORD

Part 3

Today we will take a look at the Scripture to see why the fear of the LORD is necessary and what are the results of fearing the LORD.

The Fear of the LORD Is Necessary

It is necessary to worship.
Psalm 5:7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.

It is necessary in service.
Psalm 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

It is necessary to keep us from sin.
Exodus 20:20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

It is necessary to good government.
II Samuel 23:3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

It is necessary for the administration of justice.
II Chronicles 19:6-9 And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.
Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.
And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

It is necessary for the perfecting of holiness in the life of a Christian.
II Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

What Are the Results of Fearing the LORD

It brings pleasure to the Lord.
Psalm 147:11 The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
As HIS children, our heart´s desire should be to please our FATHER.

It causes the LORD´s pity to increase toward HIS children.
Psalm 103:13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

It brings acceptance with GOD.
Acts 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

It bring the mercy of GOD.
Psalm 103:17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;
Teach me to fear THEE, O LORD. How we need YOUR mercy!
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
Luke 1:50

It brings blessings
Psalm 112:1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

It brings confidence.
Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

It brings separation.
Proverbs 16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
Today there is little fear of God and an abundance of evil. We need only to look around at the world and society we live in to see the growing evil.

It brings Christian fellowship.
Malachi 3:16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

It brings answered prayer.
Psalm 145:19 He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

It brings long life.
Proverbs 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

Let´s pray that GOD in HIS infinite love and mercy will teach us to fear HIM.
Psalm 86:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

This is our last lesson on GOD the FATHER. Next week we will begin our study of GOD the SON. I pray that you are enjoying this lesson and that you are daily growing in your walk with GOD. Remember, HE loves you. HE wants you to talk to HIM everyday (prayer) and HE wants to talk to you everyday as well (Bible reading). May we grow in the light of HIS love and bring pleasure to our FATHER.

See you next week!

Abundant Blessings!

A Quote to Ponder

I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere.

Lesson 6 The Fear of the LORD

Part 2

The Fear of GOD Is Commanded

Deuteronomy 13:4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

Psalm 22:23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

The disciples gave us an excellent example of this in Acts 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

Cornelius was a man who feared God. Acts 10:2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. God rewarded Cornelius by sending the Gospel to him.

II Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. The fear of GOD teaches us to live circumspect lives. This godly fear is a powerful motivation in our lives.

A Description of the Fear of the LORD

It is a hatred of evil.
Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

It is wisdom
Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

It is a treasure
Proverbs 15:16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.

It is a fountain of life
Proverbs 14:27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

It is clean.
Psalm 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

It endures forever.
Psalm 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether

It is godly
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

What Causes Us to Fear GOD?

The holiness of God causes us to fear HIM
Rev 15:4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

The greatness of GOD causes us to fear HIM.
Deuteronomy 10:12-17 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?
Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.
Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.
For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

The goodnes of GOD causes us to fear HIM
I Samuel 12:24 Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

The forgiveness of GOD causes us to fear HIM
Psalm 130:4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

The wondrous works of GOD causes us to fear HIM
Joshua 4:23-24 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

Coming judgments cause us to fear HIM.
Revelation 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
